Ok the last 2 posts showed 2 very easy ways to make flowes. After you have mastered those 2 techniques – which we believe you can do it in no time - you can try this technique which is a little bit more challenging. But you know what, as its difficulty increases a little, we love this rose a little more.

This rose is being inspired by Tim Holtz and we modified it a little and used his Perfect Pearls instead of distress inks. Here is how the roses will look like.

To start off, we would need the following

  1. Patterned paper
  2. Scissors
  3. Pencil
  4. Embossing Ink / Perfect Medium – from Ranger Ink
  5. Perfect Pearls (Kiwi) / (Gold/Pearl) – from Ranger Ink
  6. Brush – from Perfect Pearls set
  7. Glossy Accents - from Ranger Ink

Step 1

Cut three 5-petal scallops from your patterned paper. You can use a large scallop punch or you can draw freehand and cut it out. We did this freehand. We like it done this way – freehand – because you need not spend money on additional punches. And you can determine the size of the scallop you want. If you want a bigger flower, cut a bigger scallop and vice versa. The cuts may be imperfect but then again we say… embrace the beauty of imperfection of freestyle. :)

Just a tip: We use patterned paper so that the flower does not look so boring with one solid color.

Step 2

Cut the first scallop as shown. So you will get one piece with 1-petal and one piece with 4-petals.

Next cut the second scallop as shown. So you will get one piece with 2-petal and one piece with 3-petal.

Now take the third scallop and fold it into half and snip it in the center. Unfold the scallop, turn it 90 degrees and fold it into half again and snip it in the center again. Now you get a “cross” snip in the center of the third scallop as shown.

So here is what you should have right now. One piece each of a 5-petal (with a “cross” snip in the center, 4-petal, 3-petal, 2-petal and 1-petal.

Step 3

As you can see, sometimes patterned paper can look a little dull. While Tim Holtz use distress inks to add shades of color. We decided to modify a little and add Perfect Pearls instead to give the flower a little shine.

First we pressed each of all the petals onto the Embossing Ink very randomly and lightly. Do not allow the paper to soak up to much embossing ink as it will give blotches of shine after you apply the Perfect Pearls. It will also take longer to dry if it soaks up too much embossing ink which is water based.

Tip: You can use Perfect Medium as well. Apply Perfect Pearls immediately after dabbing the petals with embossing ink so that the ink on the petal will not dry up.

After applying the embossing ink, use a brush to lightly pick up some of the Perfect Pearls powder and then dust it evenly across the petals. Then leave to dry. You can use a heat tool or just leave it to air dry. The color of the Perfect Pearls powder that we used is Kiwi.

Tip: The Perfect Pearls Set comes with everything that you will need – 4 colors of Perfect Pearls powder, brushes and a small Perfect Medium Ink pad.

Repeat the process applying the embossing ink and Perfect Pearls powder to all the other petals as well.

Just a little rave again…. It is just so fun playing with the embossing ink and and Perfect Pearls. And of course getting the fingers all shiny as well…. Haha… Anyway, we did all these on the Inkssentials non-stick craft sheet and after all the dusting, it was ooohhh sssooooo easy to clean up. We simply sprayed a few drops of water onto the craft sheet and used a kitchen towel to clean the craft sheet and it is as good as new again.

Ok. So now let’s move on.

Step 4

Use a thin pencil or stick to curl all the petals outwards as shown except the 1-petal piece.

Note: From the pictures below, you can now see the shine of the papers after applying Perfect Pearls.

Step 5

Now we are going to start to put the petals together. We will start with the 4-petal piece. Roll and bring the two ends together to make it like a cone. Bear in mind to keep the petals curled outwards. If the petals become uncurled, use your pencil or stick to curl it again.

Then we glue the ends together with Glossy Accents. Hold it together for about 30 seconds and then leave it to dry.

We are going to rave about Glossy Accents again…. as mentioned previously, we did try using normal liquid glue. But we still love using Glossy Accents simply because it bonds really really well and it is so easy to use.

Step 6

We repeat Step 5 for the 3-petal piece as shown. Let it dry. Remember to keep the petals curled outwards while you are sealing the two ends.

Step 7

We repeat step 5 for the 2-petal piece as shown below. Let it dry. Remember to keep the petals curled outwards while you are sealing the two ends.

Step 8

Cut the pointed tip of the 1-petal piece. This is to ensure that the 1-petal piece can enter the 2-petal piece nicely later and not be sticking out because it is too tall. Then roll the 1-petal piece and glue it with Glossy Accents as shown below. Let it dry. There is no need to curl the petal of the 1-petal piece.

And so finally all the pieces will now look like that shown below.

Step 9

Now we are going to insert the 3-petal cone into the 4-petal cone. To do that, we snip the base of the 4-petal cone to make a little hole to insert the 3-petal cone.

Then we add Glossy Accents to the center of the 4-petal piece and insert the 3-petal piece as shown. We push it in until it can go no further. Let it dry.

Step 10

Now we are going to place the piece done in step 9 into the 5-petal piece. We put some Glossy Accents into the center of the 5-petal piece – around the “cross” snip. Then we insert the piece done in step 9 into the “cross” snip of the 5-petal piece and push in until it can go no further. Let it dry.

Then we snip off the pointed base again to create a little hole to insert the 2-petal cone later. We apply Glossy Accents to the center of the flower.

Then we insert the 2-petal cone through the hole and push until it cannot go in any further. Let it dry.

Note: There is no need to snip off the base at this stage anymore because there is no need to create a hole to insert the 1-petal cone.

We then apply Glossy Accents again to the center of the flower (note: there is no hole at the center of the flower at this stage because we did not snip off the base) and insert the 1-petal cone into the center of the flower. Let it dry.

And here is your complete rose.

Step 11 (Optional)

If you want to apply the rose to your scrapbook page and the base is making the rose too “tall”, you can always snip off the base until the rose is “flatter” to be placed on the scrapbook page.

Go on, try it and have fun.
