Here’s a door hanger – front and back.  We used the images from the Gorjuss 3D decoupage set. We used chipboard words and colored them with chalk ink. Then decorated it with some paper butterflies and rhinestones.

We were inspired to create this circular box using the winter theme oval pyramid set. The oval pyramid images can be used to make cards, it can also be used as a topper on the lid of a box. We took an empty styrofoam box (which was previously used to keep this yummy charcoal skin durian mooncake), decorated it with paper, transparency flower, ribbons, ribbon labels and rhinestones. This can be done using square boxes and the Gorjuss twist pyramid images as well. If empty square boxes are not available, you can always make one from scratch.

Materials: Your choice of paper and a scissors.

Step one:

Cut a circle or a scallop. We used a punch for ease. But if you do not have it, just simply draw a circle and cut it. If you want a scallop, use craft scissors to trim along the edges. It really doesn’t have to be perfect.

Step 2:

Fold the circle into half then fold it into thirds.

Step 3:

Use a scissors and cut along the edges (follow the black line shown in the picture). Start cutting slightly away from the pointed end because this will be the center of the flower. Make sure you cut away the folded areas. If not the petals will still be “joined” together when you unfold the flower.

Step 4:

Unfold the flower. Now you don’t need a flower punch, do you?

Step 5:

You can do the same for different sizes of circles or scallops and then layer them. You can add color to them, distress them, ink them, stamp them etc… the possibilities are endless..

Go on and try it. It’s simple.

And just to add on to the post on the stitched crepe paper flower that we posted here.

We did the same using a laced ribbon. This ribbon is very expensive because of it’s design. You can choose a simple lace ribbon and then layer them as well. Here’s what we got – similar to the crepe paper flower but this is made from a ribbon.

Pretty? Try the different techniques on different materials and you might just come up with something really nice.

These flowers got a little bit of dimension and is not flat. So when do you use these flowers? We reckon that you can use these flowers on your projects if you are putting your projects in a frame box. Alternatively, make much smaller flowers so that it will be able to fit into your album.

What do you need to have before you start?

Basically, you need papers. Decide on the color of your flowers and choose the desired paper and design. We made a pink and an orange flower, so now we decided to make a purple flower, hence we chose this piece of scrapbooking paper. If you watch Jules video, you will notice that she makes her flowers using either a Retro flower punch from EK Success (5 petals) or Tim Holtz flower die cut catridge (6 petals). For us, we cut the petals freehand. We cut 3 pieces of the large size petal and 3 pieces of the medium size petal. So in total we got 6 layers. You can cut 3 more pieces of a small size petal so it will give your flower a total of 9 layers. Either way, it’s fine.

We cut 2 pieces of slighly oval shapes from a green card stock for the leaves.

You would require a stylus to curl the petals. Alternatively, you can use the cap of a pen like what Jules did. Or you can use the back of a letter opener like what we did.

Glossy Accents from Ranger Ink is used to complete the flower.

Use a mouse pad to curl the petals. Someone  else commented that she tried to curl the petals in her palm and it worked for her as well. So if curling on the mouse pad is too difficult, you can try using your palm. More practice and you will get the hang of it.

Additional materials that you might want to use are chalk inks or glimmer mists. We used chalk inks to ink the petals and leaves to create some shade. This was done before we started to curl the petals.

Step 1:

Cut your petals using a die cut machine, punch or simply do it free hand. 3 large pieces, 3 medium pieces and 3 smaller pieces (optional). In this project, we omitted the 3 smaller pieces.

Step 2:

Sprinkle a little water on the petals so it will be easier to curl them and keep them in that shape when it is dried. Just a little will do. Too much water and you will find that it will be very difficult to curl the petals and you might even tear it.

Step 3:

Use your stylus or any rounded tip and press down on the ends of the petals. Using the same pressure, make circular movements to curl the petals. This will create some folds or lines on the petal. This is what we want – a little tattered look. Do this on the mouse pad.

Step 4:

Then use your stylus and draw in from the center of the petal to the center of the flower. This action will draw the petal upwards and towards the center of the flower.

Step 5:

Do the same for all the petals until you get  one as shown below. You may want to use your hands to curl the petals into a ball as shown below as well if your petals do not curl as much as you want it to be.

Step 6:

Do the same for the rest of the flower cut outs.

Step 7:

Use glossy accent to glue the layers together.

Glue the 3 large layers together and 3 medium layers together to get what is shown below.

Apply Glossy Accents to the center of the larger bunch of petals. Then put the medium bunch of petals into the larger bunch. Leave it to dry.

Step 8:

Use Glossy Accents to attach the leaves to the back of the flower and your flower is completed.

Have fun making your own flower embellishments!

You can make super simple flowers with just a scallop punch, a circle punch, a button and a ribbon. Just layer the circle cut onto the scallop cut. Then place the button on top. Last, make holes on the layered flower so that your ribbon can go through the flower from the back and through the button. Then tie a knot.

These flowers are flat and when placed on your layouts, it will fit into your albums without popping out too much. The good thing about making your own flowers such as these is that you can mix and match the scrap papers that you have.

So there, that’s a way to use your scraps.
